Victoria’s Secret: It’s Not About the Boobs, Silly
Flirty, sexy, and definitely not functional are the keywords the Boob Lady would use to describe Victoria’s Secret annual “fashion” show, shown on CBS last night. It was hard to distinguish the bras and panties from feathers, metallic gear, and other wild swatches of fabric adorning the models. They strutted their lean, spray-tanned bods down the catwalk with style and panache. Behind-the-scenes clips were spliced in between shots of taut “behinds.” And then there was Justin Timberlake: entertaining the crowd with his own provocative brand of sex appeal. (Now, why oh why, didn’t Justin dress in some skimpy outfit, like his female back-up dancers?)
We must ultimately thank the tireless supermodels for putting on a great show. Wearing crazy costumes, in 5-inch stiletto heels, they dashed madly back and forth for multiple wardrobe changes. Between their sets they were followed by leering cameras, who seemed eager to tease the television audience with the possibility of some truly revealing action.
The most suspenseful part of the night? A model’s shoe fell off as she high-stepped down the runway. She kept her cool, though, and balanced herself on the ball of one bare foot until she could get backstage. A very real moment when compared to the fantasy world displayed on stage. Bright lights, cameras, and a pulsating musical beat seemed at odds with what most women want from their lingerie: comfort, style and support. But that’s not nearly as uplifting to watch, now is it??
